Connecting to the server via RDP on Windows
We have previously shown you how to connect to a server using the SSH protocol. In this article, we will tell and show how to properly connect to the Windows Remote Desktop using the standard Remote Desktop Connection program.
RDP is an application layer protocol that was borrowed by Microsoft from PictureTel. The protocol allows you to connect to a remote desktop, working through it and using its resources to run certain programs.
To connect to the server, you need to find the details in your personal account.
In the instructions, we need data from the Administrator user.
Using the Windows Start menu, open the "Remote Desktop Connection" program.
In the "Computer" input field, we enter the IP address of our server. If the server is ready to accept connections from the outside, then the next step is to enter the user and password. Note that the user can be entered along with the IP address.
* Note that the standard RDP port is 3389, so there is no need to enter it along with the IP. But, if you have previously changed it, then along with the IP you must enter the new port separated by a colon: IP:port
Enter the password and connect to the server. At the time of connection, the program will ask for confirmation when checking the authenticity of the security certificate - we accept.
Additional settings
If you have several servers or you do not want to enter data to connect to the server each time, then you can use the creation of an RDP shortcut.
You need to enter the connection dаta: IP and user, and then click on the "Save as ..." button. When connecting using a shortcut when entering a password, check the "Remember data" checkbox.
In the "Screen" section, you have the opportunity to adjust the desktop resolution for your monitor.
The "Local Resources" section is used to connect: sound on the remote desktop, prohibition of key combinations, local devices and resources (disks, ports, video capture devices, printers, clipboard).
The "Interaction" section is responsible for the speed between you and the remote desktop.
In the "Advanced" section, you can configure server authentication and additional settings for connecting to the server based on location.
